¿Como se dice…?

How can I learn to speak Spanish? I need to stop saying I want to learn to speak Spanish, and I just need to do it. I guess I should start trying to speak Spanish to people who are fluent in it.

Our schools did us a disservice. They should have started us early on learning Spanish and other foreign languages. In sixth grade, when they were telling us about studying Spanish, they scared us off by telling us that we had to have mastered diagramming sentences in English, and other B.S. like that. Now, I cannot communicate with a sizeable number of Texans.

Buenos días. ¿Cómo está usted? ¿Cómo fue tu fin de semana?

  • I took Latin in school. However, I have learned Tex-Mex Espanol from living in Texas for so long. My gringo communication skills served me well in the Yucatan. However, I would be embarrassed if I had to communicate in Spanish in a situation that didn't involve tequila.

  • i wish i could too.

because then maybe, and only then could i possibly get my laptop power cord from the yo-yos at the Hyatt Regency in San Antonio.

Seriously, why the hell arent they required to SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND english if they are going to have a managerial position that requires communicating with customers?????????????????????????

  • I feel a bit like that about French but if you don't use it, you lose it and I have forgotten a lot of what I knew.

I recently went to Wales for a week. Welsh - now there is a language that you can't even begin to guess at! We live fairly near the border and although they teach it in schools in Wales it is unheard of for an English school to teach it.

  • Your post reminds me that I need to do something about learning Spanish as well. I've always liked the language and would love to be able to converse in it :-)

  • Have you tried Rosetta Stone? You can find them online, and I believe it is a very good system.

  • I took Spanish in high school...and have since forgetten nearly all of it!

But now I'm taking Italian, which is a beautiful language...and I have more of a desire to hold onto it (since I want to visit Italy SO BAD!)
