Grin and Bear It, or, Choke It Down!

Rancho Grande – that is what I get for being too lazy to make my lunch for just one day. Could I have told my coworkers that their choice of restaurants did not meet with my approval and that I would therefore not be joining them?

  • I feel your pain. My new-ish boss is a nice woman from a small town in the Midwest. She is very controlling about where we eat when we are traveling for work. Let's just say her palate is not only unsophisticated, it's got to be malfunctioning. I have had to resort to packing Luna energy bars and fruit to survive each trip. I feel ill when we are forced to walk into a Don Pablos or El Chico chain restaurant. They are Tex Mex abominations with nothing I consider edible on the menu, particularly since I don't eat beef.

  • I've not heard of Rancho Grande. I presume it's not the best of meals...

And I confess, I'm a fan of Don Pablo's. So long as you know it's not anything resembling authentic, then it's all right. I also had good times going to DP's while I was active duty in Maryland, so that helped.

  • next time they try to drag you there, make it conditional on them degrading themselves in some cruel way when you get back to the office.

  • Rancho Grande used to be the best mexican food joint in Conroe. Good to see it has kept up the quality.

  • You clearly need to work on your fake "I'm working really hard/swamped with work/sorry I can't pull myself away from my desk because I'm totally a dedicated employee who absolutely does NOT spend half my time surfing the internet" routine. That'll get you out of the office lunches anytime (and save you money and from consuming too many calories and help you avoid those boring & awkward lunches with co-workers). Bonus: you look like you're working really hard. Downside: you don't get in all that BS socialization crap with co-workers, which is kinda important in a really annoying way. Every time my co-workers invite me to lunch, I always say, "Well, I don't know. I'm so slammed, but where are you going?" And if the location isn't desirable, I say, "God, I really want to, but I just can't. Thanks! Have fun!"
